“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
~Matthew 28:19-20
I met a patient during my time as a Hospital Chaplain Intern who was given two days to live. They were placed on what’s called “palliative care” or “comfort care.” Two days went by and nothing. Four days went by and as they were being visited by their doctor, they said they experienced a warmth wash over them- something they could only describe as the Holy Spirit. I met them six months later and their cancer was gone.
This is a story of what we call a miracle, and they are few and far between. While not everyone gets to have this experience, what this patient told me next I think resonates with us all. When I asked this patient why they believe they were still here, they said, “I don’t know. But I do know that I am going to share my story with anyone who will listen.”
Isn’t that just a beautiful testimony! Their number one goal in life right now as they live on this “extra time” is to share their experience of God! Isn’t this what Jesus asks us to do? To go and proclaim to all we meet how we have seen God with us?
I wonder what the world would look like if all of us who have had an encounter with God shared it with anyone who would listen. I wonder if there might be more people who lifted their eyes towards God and allowed God’s grace and love to transform them and how they interact with others. I wonder how we might be transformed as we told our stories and allowed ourselves to live into them.
